Tribute to Phoenix?-2008
Cared For and Loved by the Great Pyrenees Rescue Society of Houston

"We lost our Phoenix today (10/22/08). His kidneys gave out after his years of abuse. We are very lucky to have known himand don't regret one minute saving a senior dog that was very expensive to care for while with us. He had just over a year with usat least he knew what love and care was for one year.
"Our poor, sweet Phoenix. For eight agonizing years his life was spent on a pitiless chain. He lived in mud and filth, weathering the harshest conditionsfrom the boiling Texas sun, to November's furious downpourswith inadequate shelter at best. He knew Man as one of two things: a hot kick to the ribs, or an icy stare of neglect. He ate only enough to survive, and only what he could find in the disgusting mud-pit that would have become his grave. He was neglected, beaten, and starved to the brink of deathfor eight inexcusable years. Finally, Phoenix became an SPCA cruelty seizure, and sadly regarded as "too far gone." He was covered in feces and urine, loaded with fleas and ticks, and was emaciated to the tune of a mere 69 pounds. He was near death, beyond exhaustion, and painfully broken. No one thought he would survive. No one thought he could be rehabilitated. The Great Pyrenees Rescue Society of Houston (GPRS) decided that whether or not Phoenix would live or die was not the point. We were determined that this battered soul would know at least one day of kindness in his pitiful life. In his foster home, Phoenix teetered dangerously on the precipice of death. Arrangements were made to stay by his side, unsure of whether he would survive the daybut absolutely certain he would not die alone. And survive he did, for one happy year.
"While being cared for by GPRS, Phoenix went to a trim 110 pounds. He had a glorious white coat, his blood work was normal and his heart was worm-free. He had a glint in his eye and a smile on his face. He spent the remainder of his days knowing the love, affection and camaraderie that was denied him for the majority of his life. At the end his kidneys gave out. Phoenix was a special dog who found a very special place in everyone's hearts. RIP, dear boy. We know you are watching over all your Pyr friends here. Thanks to Malise for giving him so much love."
